THE CONSTANT
How can the home be an anchor within the rhythms of contemporary family life? The Constant is an elegant response to this question. Designed for a young family balancing demanding schedules, globetrotting and the evolving needs of growing children, the apartment was conceived as a place of stability, connection and belonging amid constant movement.
The design approach was shaped by the clients’ lifestyle. Frequent travel forms part of their everyday rhythm, prompting a consideration of how hospitality-inspired thinking could be integrated into a private residence. The home was conceived not simply as a place to live, but as a place to return to — an environment that supports the rituals of departure and arrival, while providing a sense of familiarity and comfort. Subtle interventions, such as a dedicated luggage-packing area within the walk-in wardrobe, acknowledge these routines and embed them seamlessly into daily life.
The experience of arrival became a central organising principle of the home. Responding to the clients’ habit of washing their feet upon returning home, the entry sequence was carefully reconfigured to establish a transition between external and internal worlds. Rainforest marble lines the foyer and powder room, creating a distinct material language for the entrance zone.

Beyond this threshold, oak flooring defines the living, dining and private spaces, signalling a shift towards a more intimate and domestic environment. Through materiality, the home establishes a clear progression from public to private, activity to retreat. Drawing inspiration from hospitality environments, the material selection balances sophistication with comfort, creating spaces that feel both refined and welcoming. Layered textures, carefully calibrated lighting and bespoke detailing contribute to an atmosphere that supports both family life and entertaining.
A recurring language of curves and bullnose detailing is subtly woven throughout the interior. Originally conceived as a response to the presence of young children — softening edges and reducing sharp corners throughout the home — these details evolved into a defining architectural motif. Applied across built-in elements, junctions and custom-designed furniture, the curved language introduces a sense of warmth and continuity, while reinforcing the home's family-oriented character. Most notably, the bespoke dining table adopts the same formal vocabulary, extending the architectural expression into the objects that support everyday gathering and connection.
At the heart of the home is a story of family. In collaboration with Malaysian calligraphy artist Jameson Yap, two commissioned artworks were initially created to celebrate the Chinese characters of the clients’ children. Over time, the collection expanded with two additional pieces marking significant family milestones — the arrival of a new family member and a wedding anniversary. Together, the artworks form an evolving narrative woven into the fabric of the home, reflecting the growth of the family itself.
This spirit of adaptability informed the planning of the residence. Spaces were designed to evolve alongside the family, balancing the needs of adults and children without allowing one to dominate the other. Areas for play and family interaction are integrated into the home, while remaining carefully considered within the overall architectural framework, preserving both functionality and a sense of composure.
The result is a home shaped by movement, memory and belonging — an environment that accommodates the demands of contemporary life, while remaining a constant point of connection for the family it serves.

*The Constant is part of a larger project for the same multi-generation family. Designed before The Next Chapter, it explores how a common set of values can be expressed through distinctly different ways of living. While each home responds to its occupants’ unique lifestyles, aspirations and daily routines, both projects are grounded in a shared appreciation for craftsmanship, hospitality and thoughtful living. Through spatial planning, materiality and bespoke interventions, both homes were designed to support and shape new ways of living. Together, the projects represent an exploration of continuity and evolution — two distinct paths connected by family, yet expressed through homes with their own identities and character.
